How to Care for Your Glass Jewelry

Posted by Emeline Orloff on

Glass jewelry — whether crafted from antique Czech glass or sparkling Austrian crystal — is as delicate as it is beautiful. With the right care, your pieces will stay brilliant for years to come.

General Care

Storage

Store each piece separately to prevent scratching. The organza bag your jewelry arrived in is perfect for this — use it. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and humidity, which can dull finishes over time.

Handling

Put your jewelry on last, after applying perfume, hairspray, and lotion. Chemicals in these products can cloud glass surfaces and corrode metal components. Remove pieces before swimming, exercising, or sleeping.

Caring for the Glass

Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear to remove oils and residue. For a deeper clean, use a slightly damp cloth — never submerge glass beads or crystal in water, as prolonged moisture can weaken adhesives and metal findings.

Caring for Metal Components

Sterling Silver Ear Wires

Sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time — this is normal and reversible. Polish with a soft silver polishing cloth to restore shine. Avoid water, chlorine, and sulfur-based products (including some lotions and rubber). Store in an airtight bag or the included organza pouch when not in use to slow tarnishing.

Gold Filled Ear Wires

Gold filled wire is durable but not impervious. Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth after each wear. Avoid prolonged exposure to water, sweat, and harsh chemicals, which can wear down the gold layer over time. A gentle polish with a gold polishing cloth will keep them looking their best. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Bronze Components

Bronze develops a natural patina over time that many find adds character — but if you prefer a brighter finish, polish gently with a bronze or brass polishing cloth. Keep bronze dry; moisture accelerates patina development and can cause uneven discoloration. Avoid contact with lotions, perfumes, and cleaning products.

The Golden Rule: Keep It Dry

Water is the common enemy of all the metals used in your jewelry. Remove pieces before washing hands, showering, swimming, or any activity where they may get wet. Even brief, repeated exposure adds up over time.

A Note on Antique Glass

Antique Czech glass beads are absolutely wearable every day — and we encourage you to enjoy them. That said, handle with care. Each bead is rare and often irreplaceable, carrying history that can’t be reproduced. A little mindfulness goes a long way: avoid snagging, impacts, and prolonged exposure to moisture or chemicals, and your piece will reward you with a lifetime of wear.
